So when Malorie (Sandra Bullock) and her two kids, Girl (Vivien Lyra Blair) and Boy (Julian Edwards), arrive at the formerly disused, newly inhabited Janet Tucker School for the Blind, that’s in keeping with Malerman’s intention.īut Malerman at least made blindness a choice. (The American northwest is ever so much more striking than Detroit.) It’s not their original work. But the ending of Bird Box defies such logic in favor of contrivance, which isn’t the fault of the film per se director Susanne Bier and writer Eric Heisserer merely adapted the story from the 2014 Josh Malerman novel of the same name, condensing its plot and swapping its setting for the sake of economy and a stronger visual palette. Millicent Simmonds readies her sound-amplifying doohickey. There’s a respectable internal logic to A Quiet Place‘s conclusion: After a noisy battle with one aurally enhanced alien beast, it stands to reason that other aurally enhanced alien beasts might hustle on over to see what’s shakin’. ![]() For all their doom and gloom, these films are, in their fashion, optimistic: Mankind prevails over evil, whether extraterrestrial or otherworldly, triumphant but steeled for whatever comes next, be it more monsters, as in the case of A Quiet Place, or a life confined within the walls and beneath the forest canopy of a school for the blind smack dab in the middle of Nowhere, Northwestern USA, as in the case of Bird Box. Here, “something right” specifically refers to casting, perhaps, or speaks to the temperature of the day and pop culture’s increased fixation on apocalypse, or maybe that audiences liked A Quiet Place so much that what’s essentially “what if A Quiet Place but for eyeballs” has unintended built-in allure. Putting too much stock in Twitter reactions as a gauge of a pop culture totem’s true popularity is a rookie mistake, that’s for certain, but when a movie like Bird Box forms enough of a fan base to inspire its own self-titled challenge, well, that movie’s obviously doing something right. On the other, social media has gone full goose bozo over the movie since it went to air. On one hand, Netflix hasn’t yet verified the roughly 45,000,000 account figure they posted to Twitter the week after Bird Box‘s premiere on Dec. The three other marauders are played by Keith Jardine, Ashley Alvarado, and Kyle Beatty. It’s a near guarantee that Bird Box‘s inexplicable mass appeal will yield better returns than social media trends as time moves on the streaming service has declared it their most popular film to date, a claim as dubious as it is palatable. Probably the most recognizable of the four marauders is David Dastmalchian, who plays Scott Lang's pal Kurt in the Ant-Man movies. When Bird Box finally reveals the events leading up to Malorie's trip down the river, a group of marauders emerge from the woods and corner the family when they're on a supply run. Anderson recently played serial killer Jerry Brudos in the Netflix thriller series Mindhunter. In the "Five Years Later" portion of the movie, Happy Anderson plays a character credited only as River Man, who ambushes Malorie and the children in the river and tries to persuade them to remove their blindfolds. Gary is played by British actor Tom Hollander, who has appeared in films like In The Loop and About Time, and this year played Queen manager Jim Beach in Bohemian Rhapsody. until it's revealed that he's been corrupted by the entities and is really there to sabotage the group. Gary, the stranger who is let into the house by Olympia, at first seems to be just another survivor. Olympia, the pregnant girl who joins the survivors slightly later, is played by Danielle MacDonald - who you'll definite recognize if you watched Netflix's other recent movie release Dumplin' (she played the lead). In addition to his starring role in the Oscar-winning drama Moonlight, Rhodes also appeared in this year's The Predator as Nebraska, part of the main group of "Loonies." Another familiar face in the house is supermarket worker Charlie, played by Lil Rel Howery. You'll probably recognize Howery from his role in last year's Get Out, where he went above and beyond the call of duty as TSA employee Rod Williams. ![]() You may recognize Malkovich from the film Being John Malkovich, and his other famous movie roles include Dangerous Liaisons and Burn After Reading.Īlso taking shelter in the house is construction foreman Tom, who is played by Trevante Rhodes. Greg is in a legal dispute with his neighbor, Douglas, who is played by John Malkovich. ![]() Henry Wu, and also played the hacker Whiterose in Mr. Wong has a recurring role in the Jurassic Park franchise as scientist Dr. In the initial chaos of the outbreak, Malorie ends up taking shelter with a group of survivors in a house owned by Greg, played by BD Wong.
